Art Based Occupational Therapy (Well Being) Program With Maggie Sin

Rehabilitation Management Inc. (RMI) is pleased to introduce Maggie Sin, MScOT, OT Reg. (Ont), and an Art Based Occupational Therapy (Well Being) program. This program can be customized and adapted for all types of needs and conditions, offering individual and group sessions. We welcome you to review this summary and contact us for more detailed information.

Introduction
Art-Based Occupational Therapy is informed by The Five Ways of Well Being (Hogan and Warren, 2013), CHIME (Leamy et al., 2011), and the Canadian Model of Occupational Performance and Engagement (Townsend & Polatajko, 2007).  It integrates aspects of Mindfulness-based practice and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi’s concept of “flow.”  Engagement in arts can include creating music, ceramics, painting, performing, taking pictures, or appreciating the arts.

Benefits
Art-Based OT integrates rehabilitation and wellness with creating art and is a safe space for individuals to participate, create, and for discovery.  A literature review by Peruzza & Kinsella, 2010, noted that integrating creative activities appears to improve individuals’ perceived control, sense of self, expression, illness experience, sense of purpose, and social support.  There is also evidence demonstrating reduced anxiety, pain, depression, and isolation, and improved mood, relaxation, and opportunities for socialization.  There is evidence of art engagement reducing the stress hormone cortisol, need for medication, hospitalization, increasing feel-good hormones and self-rated perception of health.

Individual Sessions
Art-Based OT in a one-on-one setting allows for a more individualized program to address specific needs.  It provides opportunity to practice daily skills, e.g. planning and preparation, problem solving, and keeping a tidy space, that can translate to individuals’ other daily spaces at home and in the community.  One-on-one treatment may be suitable for individuals with higher needs, community access limitations/ remote, and individuals who may not feel ready for group-based intervention.

Group Sessions
Art-Based OT in a group setting provides greater opportunity for re-socialization and practice of social skills.  Like one-on-one Art-Based OT, individuals will have the opportunity to practice daily skills but will also have the opportunity to practice interpersonal skills such as communication, collaboration, and empathy.  Group treatment is suitable for various symptoms and conditions, e.g. depression, anxiety disorders, PTSD, and chronic pain, marginalized groups, and individuals experiencing shame, stigma, and isolation.

Getting started
Prior experience in creative arts is not required.

While an initial assessment is not required for participation, an assessment can help guide treatment and planning.  The assessment can provide insight into an individual’s interests, treatment goals, and gains.  Progress can be monitored through a re-assessment process, including measurement tools.  Collaboration with the treating team can add to the assessment and re-assessment processes in guiding an individual’s intervention within the program.   An initial assessment with report can be completed on request.

Programs are offered as 6 weekly sessions for one-on-one, and 8 weekly sessions for group intervention.  This allows time to build rapport, familiarization with art mediums, and developing (habituating) ongoing creative arts practice into an individual’s daily routine.  Sessions are 2 hours long, with time for Mindfulness-based practice, art creation, and discussion.

Sample costs and location can be provided as required, however as needs for individuals and groups are unique, a quote and specific location (to be determined) will be provided when request is made.
